Getting a smartphone opens up a whole new world of group texting, apps and social media. This new world comes with risks of cyberbullying, scams, sextortion, seeing inappropriate content, overuse and even addiction.
You've asked friends, family, colleagues. You've googled, listened to podcasts, read books- but nothing really fits your scenario or does anything to ease your concerns.
You can't be with your young person all the time, you know they need to have a phone and they've made some really good arguments for getting a smartphone- like everyone else they know.
Everywhere you turn you hear about something that has gone wrong with a young person on a smartphone and/or you see it first hand and think 'I don't want my young person doing that.'
Hi I'm Karleigh,
Owner, creator and facilitator of the Mindful Mobile Program. I'm a social worker with over 15yrs experience working with and supervising work with young people across Australia. Over this time I have had the great privilege of hearing the stories of thousands of young people and supporting them through all the challenges and complexities of navigating life. I created Mindful Mobile because I've noticed an increase in issues arising from Smartphone Usage, from experiences of friendship ruptures, cyberbullying, scams, sextortion, family conflict to significant impacts on mental health arising from overuse and I wanted to create something to provide young people with the skills they need to manage smartphones well. As a Mother, Stepmother and proud Aunty I've also experienced a range of challenges with smartphones and young people at a personal level and wanted to help others navigate these conversations which are often fraught with emotion and if not handled well can result in a lot of conflict
I want to support young people in taking ownership of their smartphone usage and understanding not just the things to look out for but how they can stay value aligned and support their goals whilst using their smartphones.
All the information you need as a parent or caregiver to support a young person to develop healthy and safe smartphone habits.
Tip sheets to support your young persons journey.
12 video modules for young people to learn what they need to know to develop healthy safe smartphone habits with interactive activities to embed the knowledge.
Two programs that sit side by side to support the development of a personalised smartphone agreement for your unique family.
Mindful Mobile is a comprehensive program covering every aspect of smartphone ownership from the physical and mental health impacts to the importance of boundaries and using smartphones to support wellbeing.
Mindful Mobile starts with a module on examining strengths, values and goals. We know young people make the best choices when they connect with values. Once this foundational work is complete values will be continually revisited in modules throughout the program.
Parents and caregivers will have access to their own portal with content to support their young persons journey. Parent/Caregiver information is delivered in a video format that can be listened to like a podcast to fit in with your life. Materials cover:
You can achieve all this and more and you won't be navigating it alone.
There is no app associated with the program, all content is accessed through a browser, but you can save a link to your devices home screen for quick access if you like.
There's no boring workbooks here and no obligation to print anything, however some families may choose to print the smartphone agreement.
Content is dropped daily for young people over a two week period but they get 4 weeks access, so if life gets busy they have time to catch up. It is recommended to follow the program in order for most benefit.
Mindful Mobile has limited participant numbers so that I can guarantee a 24hr turn around for feedback on submissions and responses to email questions. There are 11 rounds scheduled for 2024 so if you miss the cut-off for one you'll be placed on the list for the next available dates.
Ideally Mindful Mobile should be completed before having access to a smartphone however many participants have completed after having a phone and still report benefits, it can be used as a reset for those who have noticed problematic behaviours, or can be used to set foundational skills for those who have had a phone less than 12 months.
Mindful Mobile has been developed with first smartphone owners in mind. It is recommended for 12-14yr olds, feel free to email mindfulmobile@mindfulintegrity.com to discuss individual circumstances
